Hair Analysis Versus Blood Tests

Minerals are deposited in the hair and remain there. The average level of minerals is approximately 10 times as high in the hair as in the blood and because of this, minerals are easier to be measured accurately in the hair. The test provides a reading of the minerals deposited in the cells and interstitial spaces of the hair over a 2-3 month period.

Blood minerals are maintained at even levels almost all the time. If the blood becomes low in a mineral such as calcium, this mineral is removed from the bones or other tissues containing calcium, to replenish the blood. A person can have osteoporosis, or demineralized bones, but their blood calcium level will be normal. And this was my case, my blood tests for calcium, magnesium and phosphorus were at an optimum level, but all these minerals were removed from the bones to replenish the blood, while my osteoporosis was silently advancing. Therefore, the blood is not the best place to measure minerals. Minerals that are at low levels are not deposited in the hair, so that they will be retained. Hair is a storage place for minerals and if they go low, that will show up in the hair long before it will show up on a blood test. So, this makes the hair testing the best type of test.

A key principle in hair analysis interpretation is to examine mineral ratios. Ratios represent relationships and balances in the body. The ratio sodium-to-potassium it is called the life ration, being the most important one. The ratios are very important for health. For example, a low sodium-to-potassium ratio is associated with a compromised immune system and lowered energy level. It is also associated with adrenal weakness, and a tendency for carbohydrate intolerance.

Heavy Metals

Heavy or toxic metals are removed from the blood as fast as possible (our body has this ability or wisdom, if we want to call it this way). Heavy metals are stored in our body’s tissues, because they do less damage this way. Therefore, it is very difficult, but not impossible though, to detect toxic metals in the blood. Heavy metals are easier to detect in the hair.

In an acute emergency, blood tests are saving lives, and here is no doubt about this! But blood tests just give the body’s chemistry situation at that time. Also, it is important to note that blood tests can vary depending on the time of day, meals and drinks we had, physical activity level and emotions at the time of the testing. Hair testing is an average reading of about couple of months of hair growth.

The hair test is not affected much by daily or weekly changes. This means it is less useful in an emergency situation, but it is very useful for detecting long term patterns or predispositions, and therefore to correct in time the body’s imbalances.

Did You Know?

  • Eastern and Western American soil is low in Selenium, which is responsible for allergies, immune system and cancer prevention? But supplementing at higher levels than 200ugs may be TOXIC. Vitamin E levels should be correlated with Selenium levels. Vitamin C increases its uptake.
  • Calcium competes with Magnesium, therefore calcium (as a supplement) should be taken at least 4 hours apart from Magnesium?
  • Toxic or heavy metals compete with minerals, so the more toxic metals the less minerals or nutritional elements we have in our body. Candida or yeast infection may also contribute to lowering the levels of minerals.
  • Aluminium in excess affects memory and can cause Alzheimer?
  • Lead can cause nervous system disturbances, sleep disturbances, mood changes, depression, focus and concentration problems, miscarriages and birth defects?
  • Low levels of Molybdenum may cause gum disease?
  • Hair analysis results give information on the hormonal level, as well.

Blood Sugar Intolerance Tests vs. Hair Sugar Intolerance Tests

A blood sugar low level of a person with only tendencies to low blood sugar cannot be caught on a blood test. The hair test, as mentioned earlier, shows and identifies the body’s tendencies, so that one can early act to prevent a health condition.

The hair and blood tests as explained earlier, measure different things. The blood test measures glucose circulating in the blood at some point in time. Many people have symptoms of hypoglycemia in spite of normal blood tests. The tendency towards hypoglycemia cannot be revealed on a blood test, but it can be revealed on a hair test.
